The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is seeking a strategic media partnership with China’s state-owned Xinhua News Agency to strengthen international awareness of Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign and deepen cooperation between the two countries.
The proposed partnership is expected to promote information exchange, improve professional capacity among media personnel and enhance the global visibility of the Commission’s activities and achievements.
The ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, received a delegation of media professionals from Xinhua News Agency at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, where both institutions explored opportunities for collaboration in news sharing and public communication.
According to a press statement by J. Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communications at the ICPC, the delegation was led by Mr. Gui Tao, Deputy President of Xinhua News Agency for Africa.
During the meeting, Gui Tao underscored the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in promoting international cooperation, expressing Xinhua’s readiness to work with the ICPC to project its anti-corruption initiatives to a global audience.
He noted that corruption was a transnational challenge requiring cooperation across national boundaries, stressing that collaboration between media organisations could strengthen public awareness and international engagement in tackling the menace.
Welcoming the delegation, Aliyu described the proposed partnership as an opportunity to deepen Nigeria-China relations and support efforts to combat corruption, particularly illicit financial flows and the cross-border movement of proceeds of crime.
The ICPC chairman emphasised the critical role of the media in shaping public perception, promoting transparency and mobilising citizens to participate actively in the fight against corruption.
He called on Xinhua to support the Commission’s media and public communication activities through technology transfer and professional training for staff of its Media and Public Communication Unit.
Aliyu explained that capacity-building initiatives would strengthen the Commission’s communication capabilities, improve information dissemination and enhance the international visibility of its anti-corruption programmes.
In his response, Gui Tao reaffirmed Xinhua’s commitment to providing technical assistance and training opportunities for ICPC media personnel.
He said the agency’s extensive global network could provide an effective platform for showcasing Nigeria’s anti-corruption reforms, institutional progress and success stories to international audiences.
Gui Tao added that the proposed collaboration would be mutually beneficial and anchored on shared values of integrity, transparency and public accountability.
Xinhua News Agency has an extensive international presence, including across Africa, where it reports on economic development, trade, culture and social progress while promoting information exchange and mutual understanding between China and African countries.
The proposed partnership is expected to strengthen the ICPC’s international media presence, promote Nigeria’s anti-corruption agenda and deepen cooperation between Nigeria and China in media development, governance and the rule of law.
