Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful electioneering ahead of the 2027 general elections, while calling for a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.
Atiku made the commitment on Monday when he received a delegation from the Savanna Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development (SCDDD), also known as the Council of the Wise, at his residence in Abuja.
The delegation was led by the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, GCON, and comprised distinguished personalities who engaged the former Vice President on the need to promote peaceful campaigns and responsible conduct among political supporters throughout the 2027 electioneering period.
Atiku assured the delegation that his approach to the forthcoming elections would remain consistent with his record of conducting peaceful campaigns over the years.
He, however, urged the Council to expand its advocacy for peaceful elections by engaging all relevant stakeholders, particularly the three arms of government.
According to him, the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary all have critical roles to play in creating an environment conducive to peaceful and credible elections.
The former Vice President also called on the SCDDD to advocate for a level playing field for all political parties and candidates participating in the 2027 elections.
He stressed the importance of fairness and equal opportunity in strengthening public confidence in the democratic process and ensuring that electoral contests are conducted transparently.
Atiku further pledged his support for genuine initiatives aimed at deepening Nigeria’s democracy, particularly efforts focused on protecting the integrity, credibility and fairness of the nation’s electoral processes.
He said his commitment to peaceful politics and credible elections remained unwavering as Nigeria approaches another crucial electoral cycle.
