The Social Democratic Party has scheduled fresh governorship primaries in Nasarawa and Gombe States following the withdrawal of its previously nominated candidates from the 2027 governorship contests.
According to a report by PUNCH, the party formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission of the planned exercise in a letter dated August 24, 2026.
The fresh primaries are scheduled to hold on Saturday, September 5, 2026, using the direct primary system, with the party inviting INEC to monitor the process.
The notice, signed by the SDP National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, and National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, stated that the exercise was necessary to select replacements for the candidates who had withdrawn from the race.
In Nasarawa State, the primary is expected to take place at Ta’al Hotel in Lafia, the state capital, while the Gombe State exercise is scheduled to hold at the SDP State Secretariat in Gombe.
The party also submitted the relevant withdrawal letters and affidavits of the former candidates alongside its notice to the electoral commission.
The development comes as political parties intensify preparations and candidate selection ahead of the 2027 governorship elections.
