Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has alleged that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his sons, although he provided no details about when or where the alleged incident occurred or which of his two sons was targeted.
Netanyahu made the claim during a television interview with Israel’s Channel 14 on Monday, amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran and growing political pressure ahead of Israel’s October general election.
According to Netanyahu, the alleged Iranian threat was serious enough to warrant increased security measures for senior Israeli officials and their families.
“Iran targeted one of my sons. Iran tried to murder him,” Netanyahu said, while discussing security concerns surrounding former Israeli army chief Gadi Eisenkot, who is also seeking the prime minister’s position.
Netanyahu argued that Eisenkot should receive round-the-clock protection, warning that failing to provide adequate security could expose him to an Iranian attack.
The Israeli prime minister’s comments come against the backdrop of the recent US-Israeli war with Iran, during which Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed alongside members of his family in a strike on Tehran.
Iran has vowed retaliation for the killings, further intensifying concerns over possible attacks against Israeli officials and other high-profile targets.
Both of Netanyahu’s sons and his wife reportedly received extended personal protection from Israeli authorities in July. His elder son, Yair Netanyahu, has also spent significant periods in Miami, where his security arrangements have previously attracted public debate in Israel.
Meanwhile, Iran has installed Mojtaba Khamenei, the late supreme leader’s son, as the country’s new supreme leader. Since his appointment, Mojtaba has largely remained out of public view but has pledged to avenge his father’s death.
Netanyahu’s latest allegation has not been independently substantiated, and he did not provide evidence or further details about the alleged plot.
