The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered intensified security and rescue operations in Niger State following the recent attack and abduction of worshippers in communities within Dekara District of Borgu Local Government Area.
According to a press statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, on Saturday, August 29, 2026, the IGP made the directive during a working visit to the state to assess the security situation and ongoing efforts to rescue the victims.
Disu, who visited the Niger State Government House, was received by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, alongside the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Barrister Maurice Bello Magaji.
During the visit, the IGP conveyed the condolences of the Nigeria Police Force to the government and people of Niger State and the families of those affected by the attack.
He assured the state government and residents that the safe recovery of the abducted persons and the apprehension of those responsible for the attack remain key priorities of the ongoing security operations.
The Inspector-General commended the Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, for the Command’s response to the incident and the timely submission of situation reports.
He also acknowledged the support of the Niger State Government to the Police, particularly in providing operational vehicles, repairing Armoured Personnel Carriers and supporting the welfare of police personnel.
Addressing officers and men of the Niger State Police Command, IGP Disu directed them to sustain intelligence-led and professionally coordinated operations while giving priority to the safety of the abducted victims and affected communities.
He further directed the Command to strengthen collaboration with other security agencies and deepen engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders and other stakeholders to improve intelligence gathering and facilitate early response to security threats.
The IGP assured the Command of continued support from Force Headquarters in the areas of logistics, mobility, intelligence, training and operational capacity.
Responding, Deputy Governor Garba commended the IGP for personally visiting Niger State to assess the security situation and reinforce ongoing efforts to rescue the victims.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the Police and other security agencies in protecting lives, restoring peace and securing the release of the abducted persons.
As part of the visit, IGP Disu also met with the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Dr. Umar Farouk Bahago, CON, where he commiserated with the Emirate and discussed the role of traditional institutions in strengthening intelligence gathering, community engagement and peace-building efforts across the state.
The Nigeria Police Force, according to the statement, remains committed to rescuing the abducted persons, protecting communities in Niger State and ensuring that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.
