The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has appointed SP Awu Fidelis Jonah as the substantive Head of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen accountability, improve responses to public complaints and enhance public confidence in policing.
The appointment is part of ongoing efforts by the Police leadership to improve complaint management, promote transparency and ensure that grievances against police personnel are handled professionally and in accordance with established procedures.
The appointment was announced in a press release issued on Friday, October 9, 2026, by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anthony Iniedu, at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
SP Awu brings considerable experience in public complaints management, criminal investigation, supervision, leadership and international eacekeeping to his new role.
He was among the pioneer members of the Complaint Response Unit and served in various capacities, eventually rising to the position of Second-in-Command before his appointment as substantive head.
His experience within the unit covers complaint handling, call-centre operations, supervision, citizen engagement and institutional accountability.
Academically, SP Awu holds a Higher National Diploma from the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa; a Postgraduate Diploma in Crime Management and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice System from Kaduna State University. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Security and Strategic Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.
In addition, he completed the Advanced Detective Course 67 at the Police Staff College, Jos, and has undergone relevant training in human rights and professional policing.
His professional experience also includes international peacekeeping service. Between 2022 and 2023, he served as Deputy Contingent Commander of Formed Police Unit Contingent 11 in Mogadishu, Somalia, where he gained further leadership and operational experience in a multinational policing environment.
IGP Disu charged the new CRU head to maintain high standards of professionalism, ensure prompt responses to public complaints, uphold human rights and strengthen engagement with members of the public.
The IGP also emphasised the need for complaints against police personnel to be handled transparently and in line with established procedures.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to strengthening internal accountability mechanisms, addressing public concerns and promoting professional, rights-respecting and people-centred policing.
