At least five people have been killed in a fatal road accident involving a fully loaded diesel tanker and several vehicles along the Iwo Road–Ojoo Expressway in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Daily Times Nigeria has reported.
The accident occurred at about 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, around Aduloju Bus Stop, opposite Dominion City, when a 45,000-litre tanker reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into several vehicles, including commercial Nissan Micra cars.
According to the report, the victims comprised two men and three women. One of the deceased men was reportedly the driver of a commercial vehicle, while the three women were passengers.
The Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) reportedly said the tanker suffered brake failure before falling onto one of the Nissan Micra cars, trapping its occupants in the wreckage.
The agency’s General Manager, Adeoye Ayoade, explained that traffic congestion along the expressway contributed to the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Ayoade said a trailer conveying motor spare parts had broken down around Arilogu earlier in the morning, causing a long traffic build-up that disrupted the free movement of vehicles along the route.
The congestion reportedly created difficult traffic conditions before the tanker lost control, resulting in the fatal collision.
The Oyo State Police Command also confirmed the incident, stating that the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, had directed officers to secure the scene and assist with rescue operations.
Police personnel, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and OYRTMA were deployed to coordinate rescue efforts, manage traffic and facilitate the removal of the wreckage.
The bodies of the victims were subsequently taken to the Adeoyo Hospital Mortuary.
The tragic incident has renewed concerns over road safety, particularly the risks posed by mechanical failures involving heavy-duty vehicles on busy highways.
It also highlights the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, effective traffic management and strict enforcement of road safety regulations to minimise accidents and prevent avoidable loss of lives.
