The Executive Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Hon. Danjuma Samuel Shekwolo, has called for sustained support for cultural heritage and traditions, stressing the importance of cultural celebrations in promoting unity, peaceful coexistence and community development.

Shekwolo made the call while attending the New Yam Festival organised by the Igbo community in Jikwoyi, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The event brought members of the Igbo community together to celebrate their rich cultural heritage, express gratitude for a successful harvest and strengthen bonds of unity among their people.

Speaking at the occasion, the Kuje Area Council chairman commended the Igbo community for its continued commitment to peaceful coexistence, unity and development across the FCT.

He noted that cultural festivals play a significant role in preserving the identity, values and traditions of different ethnic groups, while providing opportunities for communities to promote mutual understanding and harmonious relationships.

According to him, the New Yam Festival remains an important cultural celebration among the Igbo people, symbolising gratitude, unity and the preservation of their rich cultural heritage.

Shekwolo emphasised the need for communities to sustain their cultural practices and pass them on to younger generations to ensure that their traditions remain relevant despite changing times.

He also applauded the Igbo community for its continued support for the current administration, acknowledging the importance of cooperation between community leaders, residents and government in achieving sustainable development.

The chairman further called for sustained cooperation and massive support for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the forthcoming elections.

He urged members of the community to remain united, peaceful and committed to the development of the FCT, while supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of residents.

Shekwolo’s participation in the festival underscored the importance of cultural inclusion and inter-community engagement in strengthening relationships among the diverse ethnic groups living in the Federal Capital Territory.

The New Yam Festival is widely celebrated among Igbo communities as a traditional occasion to mark the harvest of new yams, give thanks and promote solidarity, cultural identity and the preservation of ancestral traditions.
