President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), describing the 4.43 per cent growth recorded in the second quarter of 2026 as encouraging evidence that his administration’s economic reforms are yielding results.
According to a press statement issued on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Nigeria’s real GDP grew by 4.43 per cent in Q2 2026, compared with 4.23 per cent recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2025.
The statement said growth was recorded across key sectors of the economy, including agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and services, with the services sector retaining its position as the largest contributor to aggregate GDP.
In nominal terms, the country’s GDP stood at N119.27 trillion in the second quarter of 2026, representing an 18.43 per cent increase from the N100.7 trillion recorded during the same period in 2025.
President Tinubu, according to the statement, said the latest economic performance came at an important time, noting that his administration had spent the past three years implementing difficult but necessary reforms to stabilise the economy and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.
“In the past three years, we tried to do the hard part by implementing the necessary reforms to stabilise the economy. Now the economy is stabilised, and we have laid the foundation for a prosperous nation,” the President said.
Tinubu said the emerging economic indicators showed that the Renewed Hope Agenda was working, pointing to improvements in the country’s trade balance, foreign reserves, credit rating, infrastructure development, oil and gas production and investor confidence.
He also highlighted developments in the education and financial sectors, including the implementation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) student loan scheme and affordable credit facilities for civil servants through the Credit Corporation.
The President, however, acknowledged that challenges remained, particularly for vulnerable Nigerians, and assured that his administration would intensify measures aimed at easing economic pressures on households.
He said the government would, in the coming weeks, provide cheaper means of transportation, ramp up food production and implement various relief programmes designed to improve the welfare of Nigerians at the grassroots.
“Under our watch, the economy is on the irreversible path to experience even more growth that all homes will feel at the dining table and in their pockets,” Tinubu said.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to translating stronger macroeconomic performance into tangible improvements in the living standards of Nigerians, while urging sustained vigilance to ensure that the gains recorded remain durable.
“We are not resting on our oars. We are fully committed to translating consistent, stronger economic performance into better microeconomic outcomes for our citizens,” he stated.
