Armed bandits have tightened their grip on Dansadau District in Zamfara State, leaving dozens of villages under siege, restricting residents’ movement and raising fresh concerns over the Nigerian authorities’ response to the persistent security crisis in the North-West.

Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to end the ongoing attacks and protect vulnerable communities, warning that residents of Dansadau have endured days of fear and uncertainty as armed groups continue to threaten lives and livelihoods.

According to information provided by Amnesty International, dozens of villages across the district have remained under the control or threat of bandits for about 10 days, with residents reportedly unable to enter or leave affected communities safely.

The situation reportedly worsened when the armed men invaded ‘Yar Gada village on Friday, setting vehicles ablaze as residents fled in different directions to escape the attackers.

The latest incident underscores the growing insecurity confronting rural communities in Zamfara, where armed groups have repeatedly attacked settlements, abducted residents, demanded ransom payments and disrupted economic activities.

Residents of some affected villages reportedly said they had received telephone warnings ahead of attacks. They also alleged that the bandits demanded huge sums of money from communities, threatening to kill or abduct those who failed to comply.

Such threats have heightened anxiety among residents, many of whom face difficult choices between abandoning their homes, paying extortion demands or remaining exposed to possible attacks.

The continuing insecurity has also severely affected transportation and access to communities within the district. For years, travellers using the Magami-Dansadau road have reportedly depended on military escorts to undertake their journeys, highlighting the persistent danger associated with movement along the route.

The reported siege has raised further concerns about the safety of residents, access to essential services and the ability of farmers and traders to sustain their livelihoods.

For communities that depend on farming and local commerce, prolonged restrictions on movement can disrupt access to markets, healthcare, food supplies and other necessities. The situation also places vulnerable residents, including children, older people and those requiring medical attention, at greater risk.

Amnesty International described the continuing violence in Zamfara as a largely forgotten conflict, arguing that the failure to provide adequate protection has left villagers exposed to repeated attacks by armed groups.

The organisation noted that banditry in the state has persisted for years, with hundreds of people reportedly killed over the course of a decade of violence, while communities continue to face threats of death, abduction and extortion.

The crisis in Zamfara forms part of the wider security challenges affecting Nigeria’s North-West, where armed groups have carried out attacks on rural settlements and highways, abducted residents for ransom and forced families to flee their homes.

Despite repeated assurances by the authorities that measures are being taken to address insecurity, the continued attacks and reported restrictions on movement have raised questions about the effectiveness of existing security operations in protecting affected communities.

For residents of Dansadau, the immediate concern remains whether they can return to their normal lives without fear of being attacked, abducted or forced to pay money to armed groups.

The reported inability of residents to move freely for days also highlights the need for security interventions that go beyond responding to individual attacks and address the protection of communities over the longer term.

Amnesty International has urged the Nigerian authorities to take more decisive action to end the violence, protect civilians and ensure that communities affected by banditry are no longer left at the mercy of armed groups.

The authorities face growing pressure to strengthen security operations, improve early-warning and emergency-response mechanisms, and ensure that residents can travel safely along major routes connecting vulnerable communities.

There is also a pressing need to investigate attacks, identify those responsible and bring suspected perpetrators to justice in accordance with the law.

As the situation in Dansadau continues to raise alarm, residents are left hoping for effective intervention to restore security and prevent further loss of life and destruction of property.

For the people of Zamfara, the challenge is no longer simply the promise of improved security, but the urgent need to see tangible results that allow families to remain in their homes, farmers to return to their fields and communities to live without the constant threat of violence.
