President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election for a fourth term, expressing Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between both countries.
Tinubu, in a statement issued by the State House on Monday, October 26, 2026, described Lula as his friend and expressed optimism that his renewed mandate would provide an opportunity to deepen the longstanding friendship between Nigeria and Brazil.
The President recalled that diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to 1961, stressing the importance of strengthening their partnership in the face of changing global economic and political realities.
He noted that Nigeria and Brazil, as leading nations of the Global South, have significant opportunities to promote economic integration and advance their shared interests in the international community.
Tinubu expressed his readiness to expand cooperation between both countries in critical sectors, including trade and investment, agriculture and food security, energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, science and technology, education, aviation, and cultural exchange.
He emphasised that closer collaboration in these areas would strengthen economic ties and create opportunities for mutual development.
The Nigerian leader also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to working with Brazil to promote multilateral cooperation and advance shared priorities across Africa, South America, and the wider Global South.
According to Tinubu, strengthening Nigeria-Brazil relations remains important to advancing common interests and fostering greater cooperation between developing nations.
He further expressed confidence that Lula’s new term would provide fresh opportunities for both countries to build on their existing relationship and explore areas of mutual benefit.
“On behalf of the people of Nigeria, I wish you a successful new term in office,” Tinubu said in his congratulatory message.
Lula’s re-election, Tinubu noted, presents an opportunity to reinforce the historic ties between the two countries and pursue a stronger partnership focused on economic growth, development, and international cooperation.
